Teaching James 3 to Children

James 3 gives children some of the clearest pictures in the Bible: a rudder that turns a huge ship, a spark that sets a forest alight, a spring that can only give what is already inside it. Children grasp these images quickly — and they recognise themselves in them.

They also live this chapter every week. A throwaway comment in the playground, a secret passed on, a name that sticks. Children aged nine to thirteen already know that words carry weight, but they rarely stop to think about the direction their own words are taking. James gives them a way to see it.

Four pictures from James 3

The whole chapter turns on four images, and you can build a full lesson around them:

  • The bit — my words can control my direction.
  • The rudder — my words can influence where my life goes.
  • The spark — my words can start something much bigger.
  • The spring — my words reveal what is happening inside my heart.

What’s in the resource?

This free download brings those pictures to life with three games, three activities and two craft ideas. Each one connects to a specific passage in James 3 and ends with a teaching point, so you can use them on their own or build a full lesson around them.

You will need very little: paper, card, a few plastic cups and some masking tape. The ideas were used with children aged 9 to 13, and one activity works well up to 14.
