“If you have a question, who do you go to?” Most of the teenagers at camp gave the same answer: AI.
The Trouble with Trusting a Machine
It’s an honest answer. But it’s worth pausing on. AI isn’t a being, it’s a machine. It weighs the data it has, right and wrong mixed together, and picks the most probable answer. Someone once asked it how to keep a hamburger together. You’d expect “use a skewer.” It suggested glue. And some people actually tried it. After all, AI knows best — or so we assume. Human judgement and plain common sense get quietly pushed aside.
A Camp Built on Truth
I’m grateful for the leaders who spent months preparing this camp. They built lessons straight from God’s Word, prayed over every child, and shaped morning devotions around the Bible. They even wrote a camp-wide game around the theme: AI has taken over the world and spun out of control, and people can no longer tell reality from fiction. The campers’ mission was to track down an encrypted USB, crack the password, gather components, build a working electrical circuit, and upload a virus through a forest antenna to reset the machine and save the world.
It made for a thrilling week. And it left us grateful that it was only a game — that our good God is the one truly in control.
A Hard Question by the Campfire
One evening around the campfire, a child handed me a hard, anonymous question: God says we’re made from dust and return to dust. Some scientists say the big bang formed a fog of gas and dust, and life slowly emerged from that. So why couldn’t the big bang be the moment God created the world?
I pulled out a 30-piece puzzle. I asked a child to throw it in the air and we watched to see if the pieces landed assembled. They didn’t. Not two pieces fit. Our world has countless pieces. When an explosion goes off on the news, we never see a tidy house or a tree appear afterward. We see destruction.
What God Actually Says
So we turned to Scripture. Genesis tells us God spoke: “Let there be light.” It doesn’t say He created the earth with an explosion. John’s Gospel echoes it — everything was made through the Word, and nothing was made without Him. And people were made differently still: God formed man from the dust and breathed life into him.
The One We Run To
Order doesn’t come from chaos on its own. It comes from a Creator.
My prayer is that these children will believe and stand firm on God’s truth — and that all of us will make God the first one we run to with our questions. He has the power to free us from anything that binds us. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
