When Children Meet Jesus for Themselves

“It won’t be easy, but I’ll try.” A six-year-old boy said this to me after I challenged him to share about Jesus with a friend over the summer break. It’s a small sentence, but it carries the whole heart of what I saw this summer.

“It won’t be easy, but I’ll try”

My outreaches began in May. At the end of the month, I got to put on a summer celebration at a local church, sharing about the greatest gift God has given us — his Son Jesus. In mid-June I held another celebration, this time at my own church. Using a simple watermelon as an object lesson, I explained the gospel to the children and challenged them to pass it on to a friend over the summer. That’s when the six-year-old made his quiet promise. God speaks to the hearts of children.

“Why doesn’t God just put an end to evil?”

Later in June, we were invited to lead the Bible programme at a children’s camp. Over several days, we took the children on a journey through the Bible to discover God’s plan of salvation. Most of them came from non-believing families. On the very first day, after I had talked about creation and the fall, one boy asked, “Why doesn’t God just put an end to evil in the world?” Many more questions followed. I gave him a short answer: “God already has a solution for that. We’ll talk about it over the next two days.” And he listened attentively, day after day. God had started speaking to his heart.

“I believe Jesus truly exists”

Then came July. In a struggling, underprivileged neighbourhood, I joined a local believing woman to help run a three-day Bible club for children. One boy arrived early every single day to help us set up. While doing so, he found the pictures we use to tell the Bible stories — and to my surprise, he could retell those stories in great detail. “I believe Jesus truly exists,” he said.

On the last day, as we handed out devotional books, that same boy looked closely at one and asked me, “What is prayer?” I explained that it means talking with Jesus. He remembered we had just spoken about Jesus rising from the dead, and something clicked: “If Jesus is alive, then I can talk to him too.”

The Wonder of Childlike Faith

That is the wonder of it. Not clever arguments, not grand programmes — just children beginning to understand who Jesus is, and finding him real.

“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” Matthew 11:25

Please keep praying for these boys — that the small faith planted this summer would keep growing into something deep and lasting.
