Based directly on Matthew 27:50–51 — “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split” — and the resurrection announcement in Matthew 28:5–6: “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.”
This hands-on pop-up card craft combines the dramatic moment of the torn curtain and earthquake with the angel’s joyful message.
Materials (per child)
- 1 sheet of construction paper folded in half for the card base.
- Two strips of coloured paper (purple or red) glued only at the top and sides to form a “curtain” that can be gently torn down the middle.
- Pop-up strip (folded paper tab inside) with a drawn angel or risen Jesus figure.
- Glitter, small paper “rocks,” or stickers for the earthquake effect.
- Markers and the printed verses from Matthew 27:51 and 28:5–6.
How to Make and Use It
- Read the exact verses about the curtain tearing, the earthquake, and the angel at the tomb.
- Children glue the “curtain” across the inside of the card, draw the pop-up figure behind it, and add loose glitter or paper rocks that shake when the card is opened.
- On the front, they write: “What happened when Jesus died?”
- When they gently tear the curtain from top to bottom (or open a pre-scored line), the pop-up angel appears with the words “He is not here, for he has risen!”
- They can shake the card to show the earthquake, then share the good news.
The tearing action makes the miracle feel real and exciting, leading straight into the resurrection joy.
Recommended age range: Suitable for ages 6–10. Younger children may need help with the tearing and gluing steps.
