Teaching Children That Time Is a Gift from God
Does time feel abstract to the children you teach? This simple object lesson makes it concrete — and unforgettable. Target age: 6–12
What You’ll Need
- A sand timer or hourglass (a phone timer works too)
That’s it.
How to Run It
1. Introduce the hourglass: Gather the children in a circle. Hold up the timer and ask: “What is this?” Let them respond, then say: “Time is like this sand — once it falls through, it’s gone forever.”
2. Flip it and read Scripture: Start the timer. While the sand runs, read Ephesians 5:16 together: “Make the most of every opportunity.” Then explain in simple terms: God gives us every minute as a gift to love Him and love others. When we use that time being lazy, fighting, or doing nothing useful, it doesn’t please God.
3. The dramatic finish: When the sand runs out, say: “Time’s up! We can’t get it back. But we CAN choose to use the next hour wisely — praying, helping, learning about Jesus!”
4. Quick discussion: Ask the group: “What are some ways we waste time? How can we please the Lord with our minutes today?”
Why It Works
Children remember what they can see. The falling sand turns an abstract idea — redeeming the time — into something they can watch happen right in front of them. It sticks.
